Sewage smells ruin Ingoldmells

Sep 26 2012

Inhabitants of Lincolnshire coastal resort, Ingoldmells, face disappointment as they continue to battle with sewage smells.

Famed as a holiday resort, the Ingoldmells community fear that the background noise of the area is putting holidaymakers off staying in their resort.

The stench from a nearby sewage treatment works in the village near Skegness has been a problem for months. Residents of Ingoldmells had hopes that the nasty smelling odour would have been dealt with by now.

Back in January, Anglian Water promised to spend £800,000 in an attempt to fix the problem - which they said they were confident they could do.

Anglian Water said that the work was due to be completed by Easter.

However, despite months of trying, the attempts have failed and Ingoldmells inhabitants are left with a continuous stench.

Residents believe that the work is affecting local businesses, which get a lot of their revenue from visitors to the village.

Back in January, Maurice Darnell, from the local residents' forum, told the BBC: "We want holidaymakers coming to our village to have a lovely time - they don't need that as a background smell."

Two days ago, eight months after the previous comment, Mr Darnell is still extremely concerned about the effect of the smell.

"It's not fair on holidaymakers and it's not fair on businesses - they are losing money and people are going home.

"People are taking their caravans away, purely to get away from the smell."

Anglian Water is said to be equally as disappointed with the lack of progress, although it does believe there has been a marked improvement.

The company is said to be looking for a long-term solution to foul-smelling plant, which serves about 63,000 people.

Cleverly nick-named 'Ingoldsmells' hopes that the odour levels are controlled so that they can reclaim their holiday making status.
