Safely managing hazardous waste: Dekasan partners with WEIMA for efficient RDF production
Feb 18 2025
Dekasan Waste Management, based in Bursa, Turkey, utilises the WEIMA PowerLine 2000 single-shaft shredder to process industrial waste, including hazardous and toxic materials, in a safe and efficient manner.
Operating since 1982, Dekasan has been a key player in waste management services in Turkey. Located in the Kayapa industrial zone of Bursa, the company handles over 20,000 tons of household and industrial waste annually. In April 2024, Dekasan expanded its operations to include a dedicated line for processing hazardous waste from industrial activities. The company processes materials such as rubber, plastics, textiles, chemicals, paint products, and toxic substance-contaminated containers into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) using the WEIMA PowerLine 2000 shredder. This high-calorific RDF is then sold to regional cement manufacturers.
Processing efficiency with high throughput
Waste is delivered by truck and fed into the shredder using a gripper. The WEIMA PowerLine 2000, driven by a 315 kW hydraulic system from Hägglunds Bosch Rexroth, efficiently reduces materials to a uniform particle size of 50 mm. With a working width of 2,000 mm and rotor diameter of 800 mm, this shredder is perfectly suited for single-stage processing of a wide variety of waste types. Its robust construction ensures reliable performance even under fluctuating material streams and demanding conditions. “Depending on the material, we achieve throughput rates ranging from four to nine tons per hour,” explains Tolga Boşnak, Environmental Engineer at Dekasan, responsible for implementing the new RDF line.
Enhanced working conditions with dust reduction
To improve safety and comfort for employees, Dekasan has integrated an injection system that moistens the material in the hopper area during shredding. This system significantly reduces dust in the production area, enhancing working conditions for the team.
Comprehensive quality control and safe processing
After shredding, the material is conveyed via a belt and passes through a metal separator. Before being transported, the shredded material undergoes chemical analysis in Dekasan's in-house laboratory. This allows the company to adjust the calorific value of the RDF by blending different material batches according to customer specifications.
Reliable operation with intelligent shutdown feature
Industrial and hazardous waste often contains abrasive and disruptive materials like metal, which can damage the shredder. The WEIMA PowerLine 2000 automatically shuts down if such materials are detected, and the hydraulic inspection flap allows for easy removal of the unwanted materials. This feature minimises downtime and ensures the shredder is quickly ready to resume operation.
Ongoing support and service for uninterrupted performance
To ensure continuous, optimal performance, Dekasan has signed a service agreement with WEIMA. Under this agreement, a WEIMA technician inspects the shredder quarterly and can remotely adjust parameters as needed, helping to keep the shredder operating smoothly with minimal interruptions.
One shredder, many benefits
Dekasan chose the WEIMA shredder for several reasons. Unlike other solutions, WEIMA’s single shredder can handle the entire shredding process without the need for both pre- and post-shredding systems. This not only saves valuable space in the production hall but also reduces both acquisition and maintenance costs. The shredder’s robust hydraulic drive, reliable performance, and the ongoing service provided by WEIMA were crucial factors in the decision.
“We’ve been very satisfied with the machine since its installation, and we look forward to adding more WEIMA shredders to our operations. We’re excited about our long-term partnership,” says Tolga Boşnak.
