Katerva Award Grand Prize is Highest Global Sustainability Recognition

MBA Polymers, the world-leading multinational plastics recycling and technology company, has been announced as the winner of the 2013 Katerva Award.

The Katerva Award recognises innovations with the greatest potential to advance the planet toward sustainability. The awards are sometimes referred to as the Nobel Prize of Sustainability.

Katerva Award Winners receive substantial legal, business, and operational support from a number of distinguished companies and individuals from the Katerva Winners’ Circle, helping them move quickly from innovation to solution.

Katerva's mission is to identify and accelerate the spread of the world’s most promising ‘disruptive’ innovations.

This year’s Katerva Award winner was chosen from 50 competitive finalists - the top five-ranked projects in each of ten award categories. MBA was the winner in the Materials and Resources section.

Terry Waghorn, founder and CEO of Katerva explained, “Many of today's sustainability challenges overwhelm conventional approaches. They require disruptive innovation as well as the ability to scale rapidly. Katerva is designed to recognise that and to catalyse and accelerate breakthrough solutions.”

MBA Polymers has developed breakthrough waste separation technology and has grown to become what is now the world’s primary company recovering plastic from large complex waste streams such as end-of-life cars, computers, electronic appliances and recently household waste.  MBA has over 300 million pounds/year of processing capacity to turn waste into high performance plastics. MBA works with some of the largest manufacturers in the world to close-the-loop by replacing virgin plastics with MBA plastics in new products such as printers, household appliances and office equipment

MBA Polymers originated in the US and but is now located in the UK.

Chief Executive Nigel Hunton commented, “We are absolutely delighted to have won this prestigious award. We believe that MBA Polymers has the right people, expertise and technology to make the difference that Katerva have recognised.

We have just received new funding from our investors which will allow us to further develop our business and move to the next stage of commercialising our process and products.

We aim to become a company making proper commercial returns as well as providing significant environmental benefits. That’s the mix which will ultimately provide us with the profitable base from which we will grow in the future and we’re confident that help from Katerva will assist us on that journey.”

A year ago MBA celebrated its 20th birthday by receiving two major innovation and environmental awards in a week – the 2012 Gothenburg Award for Sustainable Development * and GoingGreen’s ‘Company of the Year*.

Additionally, SHFT.com *released an exciting 3 minute documentary video on MBA Polymers as one of the 10 innovators leading important change around the world.
