Universal Carbon Footprinting Simplified
Apr 28 2011
Former Olympian and now CTO of @UK PLC, Ronald Duncan, today explained how previously “impossible” Universal Carbon Foot-printing is now very possible, and the significant benefits that this development can offer industry, in particular the NHS and other large organisations facing the combined pressures of being greener and needing to make significant cuts.
The presentation entitled “Lean and Green: Sustainable and Cost-effective Procurement” was delivered at the eWorld Purchasing & Supply Conference, held at the QEII Conference Centre in London on the 2nd March 2011.
Duncan spoke about at “lean procurement” methodology and best practice from the vantage point of online spend analysis tool SpendInsight™, that quickly and cost-effectively highlights areas of wastage within an organisation’s procurement.
It was SpendInsight technology that was used to support a National Audit Office report into NHS procurement of consumables, (released February 2011) that revealed significant potential savings for the NHS. The NAO’s review of 61 NHS trusts showed that at least £½ billion per year could be saved from a current £4.6billion consumables expenditure budget.
Duncan said: “When I was a ski-racer I realised that I was increasingly skiing on a melting planet. This realisation led me to believe passionately that we as ordinary people could do something to turn back the clock on global warming. Everyone said at the time that working out a Universal Carbon Footprint was impossible. I like impossible challenges. I now believe we’ve found the answer.”
Duncan continues, “We now have the potential to realise lean and green efficiencies across organisations of varying sizes, helping to create huge savings and to diminish the environmental impact on the planet.”
Duncan concludes, “An annual budget saving of £½ billion in the NHS alone could be seen as more money being available for frontline patient care. ‘Lean and Green’ is one thing, but with these levels of savings, it is a technology and methodology that could quite literally help to save lives.”
