Air France cuts pollution with low carbon flight

Oct 18 2011

Air France has raised the bar in the worldwide battle to reduce pollution by completing the most environmentally-friendly flight ever seen.

The renowned carrier managed to put on a service between Toulouse-Blagnac and Paris-Orly that produced the lowest amount of carbon emissions recorded from a commercial journey.

Bosses said that just 54g of CO2 emissions per person were emitted - half of the standard volume seen on a conventional flight.

To drive down pollution created by the one hour and twenty minute service, Air France used a 50 per cent mix of sustainable bio-fuel, optimised flight procedures and cut down on weight.

"Air France's determination to conduct its business operations in a sustainable, responsible manner is central to the corporate plan, which emphasises its societal responsibility and commitment to stakeholders," a spokesperson for the firm commented.

Last week, Virgin Atlantic revealed that it was developing a new bio-fuel that produces 50 per cent fewer carbon emissions than standard oil. It is hoping to utilise the fuel on flights within the next two to three years.
