Pacific Island nations commit to a Fossil Free Pacific and a pathway to 100% renewables.
Apr 04 2023
The Pacific Island nations have made a strong commitment to a sustainable future by announcing their plan for a "Fossil Free Pacific" and a shift to 100% renewable energy. At the 2nd Pacific Ministerial Dialogue on Pathways for the Global Just Transition from Fossil Fuels, hosted by Vanuatu and Tuvalu in Port-Vila, six countries - Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Tonga, Fiji, Niue, and the Solomon Islands - agreed on the "Port Vila Call for a Just Transition to a Fossil Fuel Free Pacific". This declaration solidifies the region's leadership in phasing out fossil fuels and showcases their innovative approach to achieving a just transition towards accessible renewable energy.
Despite having no historical responsibility for the climate crisis, the Pacific region has consistently demonstrated its commitment to climate action, including Vanuatu's push for an advisory opinion on climate change from the International Court of Justice, the development of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, and Tuvalu's recent joining of the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance as a core member. The Pacific leaders recognize that there is no pathway to 1.5 degrees without a significant reduction in fossil fuels and a ramp-up of renewable energy, and they are urging other global leaders to follow their lead in phasing out fossil fuels.
However, achieving a swift and equitable transition will require expanded public and private financing for the just transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, and the Port Vila Call for a Just Transition calls for innovative, simplified mechanisms and reforms of existing financial institutions to make this possible. The Pacific Island nations are demonstrating immense leadership in the fight against the climate crisis and urging historically responsible countries to take immediate action towards a fossil fuel-free future without loopholes.
