Fuel-Free Emission Destruction

As is the case with many industrial manufacturing operations, process emissions are best destroyed using thermal or catalytic oxidation technologies. Time, temperature, and turbulence are employed within these devices to convert harmful emissions into carbon dioxide, heat and water vapor. However, one abatement technology has become the preferred option due to its energy efficient operation and high destruction capability.

The Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) destroys Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and odorous emissions through the process of high temperature thermal oxidation. It differs from the catalytic, recuperative and direct-fired oxidizer technologies in that destruction is achieved with little to no auxiliary fuel required once the RTO is brought up to temperature. The regenerative component makes it capable of fuel-free operation at very low concentrations.

The Anguil Environmental RTO has multiple design features and enhancements that make it the preferred abatement technology for industrial applications and manufacturing operations. Process gas with VOC and/or HAP contaminants enters the oxidizer through an inlet manifold. Poppet valves control flow within the oxidizer, directing gasses into energy recovery chambers where the process emissions are preheated. The contaminants are progressively heated in the ceramic beds as they move toward the combustion chamber. Toxins are then oxidized in the combustion chamber, releasing thermal energy in the ceramic beds that are in the outlet flow. These outlet beds are heated and the gas is cooled so that the outlet gas temperature is only slightly higher than the process inlet temperature. The valves alternate airflow direction into the ceramic beds to maximise energy recovery within the oxidizer. The high energy recovery within these oxidizers not only reduces the auxiliary fuel requirement and operating costs but also offers a low greenhouse gas footprint. For example, at 95% thermal energy recovery, the outlet temperature may be only 70ºF (21ºC) higher than the inlet process gas temperature. Therefore, it can reach self-sustaining operation with no auxiliary fuel usage while achieving over 99% destruction rate efficiency.

Anguil designs and manufactures all of the various thermal and catalytic oxidation systems. This ensures an unbiased equipment selection and design for each specific application.
