Waste collection joins the digital age
Apr 05 2012
Local authorities across Britain have started to push waste collection into the digital age, with the introduction of new technology from Kier Services.
KierWay is a new in-cab technology that combines vehicle tracking, route planning and performance management systems in order to maximise the efficiency of the waste collection route.
The technology is already seeing considerable savings, with successful trials taking place in four local authorities in Britain. It was able to reduce fuel usage, miles travelled and overtime payments by as much as 20 per cent owing to its ability to plan routes and analyse operational data.
There have also been improvements in relation to the standards of service. Waste management teams were able to respond to service issues in real time, which has led to a reduction in complaints.
Kier business development director, Mark Hogan, told Industry Today: "KierWay is pioneering technology which has transformed environmental services to give customers a much higher level of service provision which goes above and beyond the usual expectations for waste collection and street cleaning."
