Geminor Wins Contract to Export up to 170,000 Tonnes of Waste
Apr 11 2017
Leading energy recovery specialist, Geminor, has secured the contract to handle up to 170,000 tonnes of refined refuse-derived fuel (RDF) from Powerday, London’s premier provider of waste management services.
Geminor will manage the haulage, shipment and recovery of the refined RDF from Powerday’s sites in Willesden and Enfield to the Fortum Hogdalen energy-from-waste (EFW) facility in Stockholm, Sweden. Geminor provides this service by utilising ‘dead leg’ sea freight return journeys from the Port of Sheerness to Oxelösund in East Sweden.
Once in Sweden, the waste will be delivered as loose refined RDF to boiler 6 of the Fortum Hogdalen energy-from-waste facility in Stockholm. Boiler 6 produces 91 MW energy per annum, of which Powerday will supply approximately 30% of the fuel. Over the course of the contract, this will have delivered heat and power to around 20,000 homes. The solution is particularly beneficial, as the UK and Swedish markets operate under deficit. This means the UK produces more RDF than it can use, while Sweden does not produce enough high quality RDF for its own energy needs; something at which Powerday excels.
By managing the back haulage opportunity, Geminor maximises transport efficiencies and minimises costs, ensuring a highly efficient and sustainable outcome. This supports Powerday’s goal of zero waste to landfill and 100% recovery from its construction, demolition, commercial and industrial waste sources.
James Maiden, Country Manager at Geminor UK, said: “The size and scope of this project is incredibly exciting for Geminor. Refined RDF is so-called because it is processed to a greater extent, creating a cleaner fuel with less residues and it is of a higher calorific value (CV) in comparison with general RDF. Carrying out such refinements helps command sustainable end markets for Powerday and allows Geminor to secure long-term contracts with off takers of the product, who rate both its high CV and its suitability for transport and storage.”
Commenting for Powerday, Mick Crossan added: “Geminor has worked well with us over the past 18 months to develop this partnership and help us maintain our zero to landfill approach to waste management. We are happy that we have reached this milestone agreement.”
