600th Biological Odour Control Solution Installed
Jul 13 2010
Calling it a milestone for the industry as well as for the communities the systems serve, Bord na Mona Environmental Products U.S. announce that the Bord na Mona company had recently completed installation of a series of odour control system solutions at sites throughout the USA, Europe and Asia. In the process of doing so, according to Bord na Mona Environmental Products U.S. Inc. President Shane Keaney, the company had reached the 600 installation milestone.
“The achievement of this historic milestone is a testament to the readiness to embrace environmentally advanced and sustainable biological odor control treatment solutions on a large scale basis,” Keaney said today. “Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Europe are ahead of the United States in adopting biological solutions but we believe that this situation is changing quickly and dramatically as the significant benefits of biological treatment are being recognized by American customers.”
According to Keaney, recent overseas developments include the roll out of the company’s MONASHELL technology for major wastewater treatment plants in Europe including SIAAP, Acheres in Paris, Bransands, Northumbrian Water in the UK, and the Monza Wastewater Treatment Facility in Italy. In addition three Bord na Móna MONASHELL units were installed on the roof of a large pumping station (North Point) in Hong Kong. The company has also recently finished installation of a significant contract with Corus (British Steel) in the United Kingdom using this technology to treat VOC emissions from their painting/ coating process.
Bord na Mona’s MONAFIL process uses a naturally occurring highly stable media, which can be installed to 3m in height and has typical life-spans of 5-8 years. It is particularly suited to the treatment of air from solid waste composting and MBT processes. This patented MÓNAFIL technology is currently treating more than 1,500,000 cfm of air from large composting installations all over Italy including four installations in Rome.
“Odour emitted from wastewater treatment processes is increasingly a concern as populations grow and housing encroaches upon once-remote treatment facilities,” said Keaney. “Odour is more than unpleasant. It derives from sulfurous compounds that can raise acidity and cause corrosion. Our MÓNASHELL Biofiltration System is a sustainable, low maintenance and low operating cost alternative to traditional carbon or chemical scrubbing. The reuse of waste shells as media maintains a neutral pH, allowing for highly effective biological treatment of odourous reduced sulphur compounds in wastewater and industrial airstreams without the use of chemicals or nutrient addition.”
According to Keaney, the MÓNASHELL and MONAFIL technologies are designed to deliver significant, environmentally responsible benefits for wastewater pumping stations, wastewater treatment works, sludge handling and treatment processors, municipal solid waste and composting centers, as well as various industrial facilities. MONASHELL is also very effective for treating a broad range of compounds and high and variable levels of H2S and Organic Sulfides at the lowest whole life cost. MÓNASHELL uses a smaller footprint than conventional biofilters and its offsite or onsite modular construction allows ease of installation.
