Actuator Initiatives Drives Water and Wastewater Industry Forward

With expertise dating back over five decades manufacturing and supplying electric actuators for the water industry, IFAT is one of the most important events on AUMA’s (Germany) exhibition schedule. The company reports that the benefits of maintenance free, easy-to-install electric cables has led to widespread adoption of its products in water / sewage treatment plant, weir and sluice gate valve control applications.

Latest developments by AUMA include new features for its widely adopted Generation .2 series of actuators / controls and an industry leading advancement in corrosion protection. Additionally, a book authored by an AUMA specialist confirming the company’s skills supporting steel constructions for water systems will be launched.

New accessories for manual emergency operation for the company’s Generation .2 actuators was a key feature. Recent advancements to the range, which was launched in 2010, include a handwheel locking mechanism to prevent unauthorised operation and an adapter for emergency operation using power tools. Additionally, a chain wheel option has been introduced – this can be used to replace handwheels giving the convenience of manual operation, even if actuators are in inaccessible locations.

Heavy investment in R&D has resulted in a major initiative by AUMA to enhance corrosion protection. A new two-layer powder coating process for housing parts provides unrivalled protection against weather and environmental factors. Outstanding chemical / UV resistance is offered and extreme protection against mechanical damage is also provided.

Technical writing capabilities are confirmed with the launch of a 320 page book by AUMA employee Claus Zander. AUMA reports that "Antriebstechnik für den Stahlwasserbau" [Actuator Technology in Steel Constructions for Water Systems], has potential to become a standard German language water industry reference source.
