AAB’s production site in Mexico achieves 80% reduction in emissions.
Nov 27 2024
ABB’s production site in Saltillo, Mexico, has achieved a remarkable 80 percent reduction in emissions over the past two years, continuing the company’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing. This achievement translates to a reduction of over 5,200 tons of CO₂e compared to the baseline set in 2022. The significant drop in carbon emissions is largely due to the implementation of smart building technologies and the use of photovoltaic (PV) systems, which have helped optimise energy use and integrate renewable energy sources.
The site leverages ABB’s smart energy management system, ABB Ability™ Energy Manager, to monitor energy consumption in real time and identify opportunities for further efficiency improvements. Over 1,000 PV panels have been installed at the facility, providing 980 MWh annually, which covers approximately 10 percent of the site’s total power needs. The rest of the electricity consumed is sourced from renewable energy projects in Mexico, validated through I-REC certificates. Additionally, ABB has installed Terra AC wall boxes for electric vehicle (EV) charging, further supporting sustainable transportation.
The facility’s sustainability efforts began in 2019, with the site receiving Clean Industry Certification. Since then, it has implemented various energy-saving measures, including the installation of motion detectors, LED lighting, and external PV lighting. Skylights in the building’s roof help reduce the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours, leading to energy savings of nearly 1,800 MWh annually.
Water conservation is another priority at the Saltillo site, where over 60 percent of the water used is treated and repurposed for gardening on-site. These efforts are crucial in a region like Coahuila, Mexico, which faces significant water stress.
Mike Mustapha, President of ABB Electrification’s Smart Buildings Division, emphasised that the Saltillo site’s progress is a key example of how smart buildings can achieve both sustainability and cost savings while enhancing occupant comfort and safety. The reduction in emissions from the facility is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 947 homes for an entire year, contributing to Coahuila’s regional emission reduction goals.
ABB’s commitment to sustainability is aligned with its science-based net-zero targets and the Net-Zero Standard of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Through its scalable Mission to Zero™ program, ABB works to enable a low-carbon society by promoting renewable energy, energy management, and building automation across industrial and commercial operations.
