Chinese wastewater sector uses Siemens technology

The Chinese municipal wastewater market has started to employ an advanced biological nutrient removal technology.

Both the Tianjin Municipal Engineering Design & Research Institute and the North China Municipal Engineering Design & Research Institute have adopted the VertiCel Process, which has been developed by Siemens Water Technologies.

During a full-scale pilot of the system in the city of Tianjin, it was found to be a cost-effective way of upgrading existing wastewater treatment infrastructures.

As well as meeting the requirements of the country’s new class 1A standards for nitrogen and phosphorous removal, the water management method has also been created to save energy and time.

The technology can be fitted easily into existing tanks, consumes 30 per cent less power than traditional aeration systems and nitrifies throughout the whole process.

Siemens commented: "The flexibility of the system design allowed the [Tianjin Capital Environmental Protection] to adopt the process to meet its specific needs, while meeting effluent standards."
