Recycled Sewage Water to Run District Cooling Plant in Dubai Healthcare City

Emirates Central Cooling Corporation (Empower) from United Arab Emirates has switched to Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) system of Dubai Municipality to obtain water for its cooling towers in Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC).

This represents a step forward toward preserving the environment in compliance with the Executive Council Order No.27 to all district cooling companies on replacing desalinated water with sea water or treated sewage water.

Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower said: “We have installed a new polishing plant with a capacity to deliver 1000 m3/day of pure water in DHCC District Cooling Plant based on Reverse Osmosis technology. This is designed to purify the water in order to minimize the contamination of the DHCC cooling tower plant equipment and to minimize water wastage.”

Bin Shafar added: “The purpose of district cooling is to save energy. As we lead by example, we have adopted this new technology. Most real estate projects in Dubai are equipped with district cooling services which require a huge amount of water. Using sewage or recycled water represents a huge step in water conservation.”

“This move comes in line with The Executive Council of Dubai order to all district cooling companies in the emirate not to use desalinated water in its operations. Community segments need to adopt the principles of energy conservation as their core values so that future generations will gain maximum benefit,” said Bin Shafar.

Empower works on sustainable use of the amount of water in its daily operations without compromising on the quality of the service.

Bin Shafar added: “This move will contribute in saving water resources in light the scarcity of water in the world because of the climate change.”

He pointed out: “In this part of the world cooling is essential for more than two thirds of the year. The new move works at saving water intensively so that our children and grand children will enjoy wealth of water instead of losing it in district cooling.”
