Temporary Treatment Systems Provider Supports Dwr Cymru Capital Investment Programme

UK based Siltbuster Process Solutions (SPS) has just helped Dwr Cymru (DCWW) maintain treatment capacity during the construction of new works at its Henllan and Croesgoch Sewage Treatment Works in West Wales, as part of the water company’s capital investment programme for growth projects. 

A framework supplier for DCWW, and an integral part of the supply chain, SPS was chosen for speed with which it can supply complete temporary treatment systems. In the case of these projects, SPS had an entire temporary wastewater treatment plant mobilised, on site and operating within 3 weeks of receiving the order.

SPS was engaged directly by Tier 1 Contractor Kier (May Gurney) as a framework supplier for mobile settlement systems.  Drawing on its experience, SPS recommended a solution involving a number of its hire fleet clarifiers, to be used in conjunction with DCWW’s internal fleet of Submerged Aerated Filters. The temporary treatment system had to receive the full flow and load of the existing works to maintain site compliance throughout the entire construction programme. 

SPS operates a fleet of portable, packaged, compact treatment units, so that solutions can be rapidly deployed onto site. Through working closely with Kier and DCWW operations, the entire temporary wastewater treatment plant was mobilised, on site and operational within 3 weeks of the order being placed.  Furthermore, the modular nature of the equipment meant that it was ideal for the constraints of typical wastewater treatment works, where large areas are not always available.

At Henllan Sewage Treatment Works the plant had to be sized to treat up to 14l/s to a 30/45/20 (BOD/SS/Amm) standard. Therefore SPS provided two HB40R units along with an auto-desludging facility as primary settlement, with a further two units as humus settlement in conjunction with the DCWW internal SAF unit.  Due to the configuration of the site, the temporary treatment plant was located adjacent to the site access road and all equipment provided with full access for maintenance.

At Croesgoch Sewage Treatment Works the plant needed to treat up to 6.2l/s to a 35/50 (BOD/SS) standard.  In this instance SPS provided a single HB40R unit along with auto-desludging facility as primary settlement, with a further unit as humus settlement in conjunction with DCWW internal SAF unit.  Both sites were located in the same geographic area so SPS worked with the Kier and operational teams to ensure that the temporary treatment plants were installed and fully operational within a 2 week period. 

Following the successful seeding of the plants, the existing works were taken offline to allow the complete refurbishment of the sites.  Ultimately this approach provided the efficiency and flexibility in the construction programme to ensure that the key delivery date was not compromised.
