Plans for the UK’s Energy Future
Mar 07 2011
In a speech at CentreForum last week Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne’s has outlined his plans for the UK’s energy future, stressing the need to stop depending on fossil fuels and outlining plans for domestic measures which will help consumers to monitor their own energy use and implement small scale green technologies.
Director General of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Tom Foulkes said the engineering body agreed, but further action was needed.
“Chris Huhne is absolutely right; we must urgently address our reliance on fossil fuels if we want to have a secure and sustainable energy supply in future. However, with a quarter of our electricity supply coming offline over the next decade it’s not just a case of equipping consumers with tools to manage their own energy usage, Government must press ahead with strategic plans to fundamentally change the UK’s energy sector.
“In short, we need a long-term plan for the overhaul of the UK’s energy infrastructure, a stable floor price for carbon and effective implementation of the Electricity Market Reform, and clear commitment to upscaling renewable forms of energy that will give private investors the confidence to make long-term commitments in vital green projects.”
