Groundbreaking project in the Sultanate of Oman aims to produce alternative fuels from household waste
Feb 18 2025
MVW Lechtenberg & Partner, a consulting firm based in Duisburg, is set to develop a processing plant in the Sultanate of Oman aimed at producing alternative fuels from household waste. The facility will be located in Salalah, in collaboration with Oman Environmental Services Holding Co SAOC – "be'ah" and Raysut Cement.
A signing ceremony was held in Muscat, Oman, under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Dr. Mansoor Talib Ali Al Hinai, Chairman of the Public Service Regulation Authority. The new plant will process waste from the Dhofar region, including approximately 800 tons of household waste daily, along with bulky waste and other materials. Recyclable materials will be sorted, while the non-recyclable waste will be converted into environmentally friendly substitute fuels for use at the local cement plant. The organic waste will be composted, along with tree and shrub clippings and agricultural waste, to produce a high-quality substrate. In total, around 1,500 tons of waste will be processed in an eco-friendly manner each day.
Dirk Lechtenberg of MVW Lechtenberg & Partner emphasised that this collaboration is a significant milestone in promoting the circular economy and helping Oman meet its climate neutrality objectives. The project aligns with global efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and enhance sustainability in the cement industry.
This partnership marks a transformative step in waste management, strengthening Oman's commitment to sustainability and solidifying the Sultanate’s role as a leader in adopting innovative, eco-friendly solutions for a greener future. For MVW Lechtenberg & Partner, this marks their second venture in the Arab world after Saudi Arabia, where the company is also building similar plants in joint ventures with state-owned waste management companies.
