Waste to energy
Siemens and Boson energy partner to propel green energy transition with waste-to-hydrogen technology
Jul 05 2024
Boson Energy and Siemens AG have entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on technology that converts non-recyclable waste into clean energy. This partnership aims to advance sustainable local energy security, enabling hydrogen-powered electric vehicle charging infrastructure without straining the grid or increasing consumer costs.
“We are thrilled to join forces with Siemens to support global decarbonization with our Waste-to-X solution,” said Jan Grimbrandt, CEO of Boson Energy. “Siemens' unparalleled technological capabilities provide Boson Energy with the capacity to scale and reach markets from Berlin to Delhi and beyond, starting immediately.”
Siemens will offer comprehensive technology solutions covering the entire sector coupling process, from initial chemical processes to final charging stations. Their portfolio includes all necessary products, solutions, and services in automation, electrification, and instrumentation. As a technology partner, Siemens will help Boson Energy create a scalable and repeatable solution, utilizing the latest digital services and software for optimization, standardization, and simulation during both manufacturing and operations.
"We are eager to support Boson Energy with our portfolio to foster a more sustainable circular economy," said Axel Lorenz, CEO of Process Automation at Siemens Digital Industries. "Digitalization and automation are essential for building and scaling production capacities, especially for complex processes like thermochemical recycling."
Addressing climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Boson Energy's distributed production of local energy and chemicals contributes to decarbonization by converting non-recyclable waste into cost-competitive, sustainable hydrogen. This is achieved through their Hydrogen by Plasma Assisted Gasification (HPAG) technology, integrated into an 'energy hub' solution that harnesses the circular hydrogen potential of waste sustainably. The hydrogen produced can support off-grid applications, such as fast charging, and enhance grid reliability.
"The partnership with Boson Energy marks a significant step in our commitment to advancing CO2 reduction technologies," said Stephan May, CEO of Electrification and Automation at Siemens Smart Infrastructure. "By leveraging our comprehensive portfolio, we aim to create a scalable and efficient model for converting waste into clean hydrogen. This collaboration addresses the urgent need for local energy security and contributes to reducing the global carbon footprint, paving the way for a more sustainable future."
Boson Energy plans to establish more than 300 plants to produce 1 million tons of circular hydrogen from waste by 2030, potentially avoiding up to 30 million tons of CO2 emissions annually. Beginning in Sweden, Poland, and Germany, Boson Energy aims to expand throughout Europe and globally.
