Waste Management
Building a 'green economy'
Dec 06 2011
Earnings, jobs and innovation have been cited as the key benefits of recycling in Europe, according to a new report from the European Environment Agency (EEA) which details the substantial rewards on offer from building a green economy.
Revenues from recycling showed fast and sustainable growth from 2004 to 2008, with turnover doubling in the seven main categories of recycling to more than €60 billion (£51 billion).
Increasingly expensive materials from Asian countries are likely to be a key factor in the demand of recyclables, as well as EU waste directives, which have contributed by creating obligations to recycle or recover increasing percentages of waste and discouraging landfilling.
The amount of recyclables sorted and placed on the market has increased 15 per cent between 2004 and 2009, leading to more jobs being created. A 45 per cent increase in employment relating to the recycling of materials in Europe is encouraging proof of the sustainable nature of the industry.
Innovation is well supported by the recycling of rare materials, particularly in the areas of e-mobility, information and communication technologies and renewable energy.
There are also positive growth figures seen in the demand and supply of resources such as paper and cardboard, and iron and steel.
