Air clean up
Will the Government say NO2 the Supreme Court?
Jun 03 2015
In April the Supreme Court ruled that the Government was failing to do enough to tackle the dangerously high levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) found in the UK.
The ruling came after the environmental lawyer group ClientEarth took the Government to court for being in breach of European law. As a result, the Government has been ordered to take immediate action.
But what difference will the ruling make in terms of bringing down NO2 levels in the capital? How will the Mayor contribute towards ensuring compliance?
Will the European Court now fine the UK for its air pollution breaches? If so, how much might it cost London?
With talk of a possible Heathrow expansion, would this be legal, given the air pollution impact?
The London Assembly Environment Committee will tomorrow question the following guests about these issues:
Matthew Pencharz – Mayor’s Senior Adviser, Environment and Energy, Greater London Authority (GLA)
- Elliot Treharne – Air Quality Manager, Greater London Authority (GLA)
- Sam Longman – Environment Policy Manager, Transport for London
- Andrea Lee – Healthy Air London Coordinator, ClientEarth
- Anna Heslop – Lawyer, ClientEarth
- Jenny Bates – Friends of the Earth London and air pollution campaigner
- Councillor Feryal Demirci – Lead Member for Neighbourhoods, LB Hackney
The meeting will take place on Thursday, 4 June from 10.00am in Committee Room 5 at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
