Headline Sponsorship of Waste to Energy Summit Announced

FCC Environment (UK), a waste and resource management company, has announced that it is the headline sponsor of the 2015 World Waste to Energy City Summit and will be taking part in the event’s line-up of over 50 international speakers across two days.

The summit, taking place from 19 to 20 May in London, brings together international waste management authorities, executives, developers, bankers, private equity financiers, technology providers and industrial end users for two days. With a firm focus on advanced conversion technologies, the summit addresses the need for innovation – not just in technology, but in policy, finance and partnership models – in order to accelerate the growth of the industry worldwide.

Felipe Urbano de Saleta, Director of Business Development at FCC Environment will be presenting about ‘Global Trends in the Waste to Energy Industry’ at 1.30pm on 19 May and Carlos Afonso, Head of Corporate Development and Concessions, will be leading a roundtable discussion at 11.30am on the same day titled ‘Financing Trends in Waste to Energy Public-Private Partnerships (PPP)’. Paul Taylor, FCC Environment UK’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), will be taking part in the Global CEO Debate at 9.10am on 20 May on the advanced conversion industry.

FCC Group believes that the UK is a Waste to Energy (WTE) industry leader as there are many projects across the world that adopt UK regulations, finance systems and management approaches when being developed. FCC’s speakers will highlight that financial barriers must be reduced and financial structures and protocols must remain simple to encourage companies to invest in WTE infrastructure. Public perception of WTE needs to be improved by engaging with local communities through communications campaigns, maintaining the highest technical standards and achieving full transparency in operations and emission monitoring in particular.

Energy has been generated from waste for around 70 years in densely populated urban areas. Countries such as Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the UK spearheaded WTE facilities in the 1970s. For example, FCC Environment’s Eastcroft plant in Nottingham was a pioneering development when it opened in 1975. Since then, WTE technology and process equipment has been improved in terms of reliability and energy recovery efficiency as well as the development of new combustion technologies.

FCC Group is an environmental services world leader, from waste collection, street cleansing and grounds maintenance to recycling, Energy from Waste (EfW) and waste treatment. The company treats waste as a resource: reusing and recycling what it can and recovering energy from what is left.

With more than 40,000 employees, it owns and operates recycling and treatment facilities all around the world, employing a wide range of technologies from mechanical and bio treatment to advanced combustion EfW. This includes 10 existing EfW projects which recover energy from 2.6 million tonnes of waste per annum (tpa), with more than 300 MWe Power output. In total, FCC processes annually over 20 million tpa of waste and serves more than 53 million people in over 5,000 municipalities.

FCC Environment is an integrated waste collection and recycling business with energy generation at its heart which operates three EfW facilities in the UK (three more are in construction or in the planning process):

  •          The Eastcroft EfW facility (200,000 tpa) in Nottingham underwent a major refurbishment in 2009 to make it the equal of the most modern EfW plants in Europe
  •          The Allington facility (500,000 pta) in Kent, which was commissioned in 2009, uses Advanced Combustion Technologies (ACT) which is more efficient in terms of energy recovery
  •          The Lincolnshire EfW plant (150,000 tpa) was officially opened by Secretary of State for Business Vince Cable MP
  •          The Greatmoor EfW facility (300,000 tpa) in Buckinghamshire is due to become fully operational in spring 2016
  •          The EnviRecover plant (200,000 tpa) in Worcestershire is under construction with commissioning schedule for 2017
  •          FCC Environment has been appointed as preferred bidder by Zero Waste: Edinburgh and Midlothian Councils to build a state-of-the-art energy recovery facility (150,000 tpa).
